If you have been following my blog for a while, you might noticed that I spend a few months in Southeast Asia in both 2015 and 2016. And in my head I am already planning my next trip. Both times I had the time of my life and did not want to go back home. That made me wonder why? Why do I like Southeast Asia so much?
No. 1 It is (usually) very sunny
My favorite thing about Southeash Asia is probably the warm weather. I know it is not very specific for Southeast Asia (there are more sunny places on this planet), but the sun always make me instantly happy. I always joke that that is because I was born on a SUNday. Laying on the beach, walking around in flipflops…. I like that so much more than snow and boots. Yes, the sweating is not great, but you get used to it quickly.
No. 2 Delicious foods
I love food and especially Asian food. The food in Asia is tasty (or spicy), usually healthy and light. It is a big difference from Dutch food (which I am not a big fan of, only stamppot). Whenever I am abroad, I always try to follow a cooking class.
No. 3 The landscape
Another thing that I like about Southeast Asia is the different landscapes and variety in cities. That is probably because the landscape in The Netherland is not that spectacular; most of it is green from grass. And we do have some beaches. But before I left for my first trip in 2015, I had never stayed longer than a day in a huge metropol, and I had never seen mountains or waterfalls in real life.
No. 4 The people (and the culture)
The people in Southeast Asia are so much different from us, western people. Most of them seen very calm and are kind (apart from the annoying taxidrivers).
No. 5 The fact that it is cheap
Maybe I should have started with this one, since it is probably the no.1 reason why people go to Southeast Asia. The living costs there for Western people are cheap (as in much cheaper than in Europe). Travelling is something that I really enjoy. However, I do not have an endless amount of money to spend, so it is great that the daily costs in Asia are low.
Als je mijn blog al een tijdje volgt, weet je dat ik zowel in 2015 als in 2016 een paar maanden in Zuidoost Azië heb doorgebracht. En in mijn hoofd ben ik mijn volgende trip al aan het plannen. Beide keren had ik een geweldige tijd en wilde ik niet naar huis. Daardoor vraag ik mij af waarom vind ik Zuidoost Azië zo fijn?
No. 1 Het is (meestal) erg zonnig
Een van de redenen dat ik twee keer naar Zuidoost Azië ben geweest is het warme weer. Ik weet dat het niet heel specifiek voor Zuidoost Azië is (er zijn meer warme plekken op aarde), maar de zon maakt mij altijd vrolijk. Ik zeg altijd voor de grap dat dat komt omdat ik op een ZONdag geboren ben.
Op het strand liggen, rondlopen op slippers…. Ik vind dat zoveel fijner dan sneeuw en laarzen.
Ja, het zweten is misschien niet super, maar daar wen je snel genoeg aan.
No. 2 Heerlijk eten
Ik houd van eten en Aziatisch eten is een van mijn favorieten. Het eten in Zuidoost Azië is kruidig (of pittig), vaak gezond en licht. Het is een groot verschil met Nederlands eten (waar ik niet zo’n grote fan van ben, behalve stamppot).
Wanneer ik in het buitenland ben, probeer ik ook altijd een kookcursus te volgen, zodat ik de gerechten thuis ook kan maken.
No. 3 De diversiteit aan landschappen
De verschillen in landschap en steden in Zuidoost Azië heeft mij ook erg verrast. Dan komt denk ik omdat het landschap in Nederland niet zo spectaculair is; het land is voornamelijk groen, van het gras. En we hebben ook wel stranden. Maar voor mijn eerste trip in 2015, had ik nog nooit langer dan een dag in een grote stad rondgelopen, en ook had ik nog nooit bergen en watervallen gezien.
No. 4 De mensen
De mensen in Zuidoost Azië zijn erg anders dan ons Westerlingen. Ik vond ze vooral erg kalm en vriendelijk (behalve de irritante taxichauffeurs).
No. 5 Het feit dat het goedkoop is
Misschien had ik met dit punt moeten beginnen, omdat het waarschijnlijk de grootste reden is waarom mensen naar Zuidoost Azië gaan. De dagelijkse kosten zijn laag voor westerse begrippen (goedkoper dan in Europa). Ik ben dol op reizen, maar ik heb geen oneindig budget, dus het is fijn dat Zuidoost Azië niet al te duur is.

I went to Indonesia last year and it was my first time in Asia. I’d love to visit Thailand though! Looks beautiful and adventurous – plus I think I’d love the food!!

I totally agree with your reasons and I also can’t stop coming back to Southeast Asia, I love it here 🙂 The weather and cheap living costs are particularly great when I compare them to my home country, England!
