Ubud is a must when you visit Bali. But be aware, it is very crowded. I like how the locals just live their lives while tourists come and go.
I think the centre of Ubud are the two parallel street JI. Monky Forest and JI. Hanoman (you will see a lot of tourists there and the traffic is always stuck), and Jl. Raya Ubud.
JI. Bisma is a small side street where you can also find some hostels, cafe’s and restaurants.
Als je op Bali bent moet je een bezoek brengen aan Ubud. Maar let op het is wel erg druk. Ik vond het mooi om te zien hoe de lokale bevolking leeft naar de vele toeristen.
Volgens mij is het centrum van Ubud de twee parallel straten JI. Monkey Forest en JI. Hanoman (daar vind je de meeste toeristen en staat het verkeer altijd vast), en JI. Raya Ubud. JI. Bisma is een kleine zijstraat waar je ook enkele hostels, cafe’s en restaurants kan vinden.
SIGHTS/ ZIEN
In the city/ in de stad:
– Campuhan ridge walk
As soon as I arrived in Ubud I wanted to see the ricefields. Because I did not wanted to pay for a guided tour or something, I went online and found out that the Campuhan ridge walk is easy to walk by yourself…and it was.
I went in the morning, saw some people but not too busy. Sadly it started raining a few times, so I had to pause at a cafe (I had taken my poncho’s out of my bag the day before).
The walk took one of two hours and there was a normal road. When I walked back I saw more people…so my advice is go early (to be away from the crowds and the heath).
The views were amazing and it is definitely worth it!
Zodra ik in Ubud was gearriveerd wilde ik de rijstvelden zien. Omdat ik niet wilde betalen voor een gids zocht ik online naar opties. Campuhan ridge walk bleek je goed te kunnen doen in je eentje….en dat was ook zo.
Ik ging in de ochtend en kwam niet hele veel mensen tegen. Helaas begon het wel een paar keer te regenen, waardoor ik in een cafe moest pauzeren (ik had de dag ervoor mijn poncho’s uit de tas gehaald). Volgens mij duurde de tocht een tot twee uur en gelukkig was het een gewone weg. Op de terugweg kwam ik meer mensen tegen, dus ik zou je adviseren om vroeg te beginnen (zo ontwijk je niet alleen de drukte maar ook de warmte). De uitzichten waren fantastisch en zeker de moeite waard!
– Kecak dance show
Kecak is a traditional dance. There were women sitting on the ground singing and making noises, while 5 or 6 ‘actors’ made a play. It was very cool to see.
Kecak is een traditionele dans. Er zat een groep vrouwen op de grond die zongen en geluiden maakten, terwijl 5 of 6 acteurs een stukje opvoerden. Het was erg leuk om te zien.
– Taking a cooking course at Canting Bali
Since I love both food and cooking, I really wanted to take a cooking course. My hostel had a poster from ‘Canting Bali’ hanging in the common area, so I decided to book a course there.
In short, the farm was nicely surrouned by ricefields, we were in a small class and got two or three teachers. We learned about different ingredients, were able to cut and make some food, and cook it too. We did everything together as a group, so I have not worked on every dish. We ended up with about 8 dishes that we ate together in the end.
Before the course we went to the market to learn about some ingredients too.
It was only half a day and worth it!
Omdat ik van zowel eten als koken houd, wilde ik graag een kookcursus doen. Mijn hostel maakte reclame voor ‘Canting Bali’ dus besloot ik daar een les te boeken.
De school was mooi omgeven door rijstvelden, we hadden een klein klasje en twee of drie leraren. Zij vertelden ons over verschillende ingredienten, ook leerden we bepaalde dingen te snijden en koken. Alles deden we samen als groep, waardoor ik niet aan alle gerechten heb gewerkt. Uiteindelijk hadden we rond de 8 gerechten en gingen we samen eten.
Voor de cursus warn we nog naar de markt geweest. Het was slechts een halve dag en zeker de moeite waard!
– Museum Puri Lukisan
The Puri Lukisan museum is the oldest artmuseum on Bali. It was founded around 1953 by a Dutch painter (Rudolf Bonnet) and a prince of Ubud. Most of the art is Balinese, but there are European artists as well. In each building you will find a different time of history and there are many English information boards. Also, there is also a cafe.
Het Puri Lukisan musuem is het oudste kunstmuseum op Bali. Het is in 1953 opgericht door een Nederlandse schilder (Rudolf Bonnet) en een prins uit Ubud. De meeste werken zijn Balinees, maar er zitten ook Europese werken tussen. In elk gebouw staat een andere periode in de geschiedenis centraal. Ook zijn er goed Engelse informatiebordjes. Verder is er ook een cafe waar je even kunt zitten.
-Saraswati temple
The Saraswati temple is a pretty temple in central Ubud. There is a pond with lotusflowers and in the back is the temple. This temple is in typical Balinese architecture and has orange accents. I went there at the end of the afternoon and it was very nice.
De Saraswati tempel is een mooie tempel in het centrum van Ubud. Er is een vijver met lotusbloemen en een tempel. Deze tempel is typisch Balinese architectuur en heeft oranje accenten. Ik was er aan het einde van de middag en toen was het een mooi gezicht met de laagstaande zoon.
– Pura Saren Agung temple
This temple is close by the Saraswati temple. It has the similar architecture and orange accents. There are also a lot of details in the roofs.
Deze tempel is vlakbij de Saraswati tempel. De architectuur en de oranje accenten zijn hetzelfde als die van de Saraswati tempel. Je kunt ook veel details op de daken zien.
– Monkey Forrest
I feel like I can not make a guide for Ubud without talking about Monkey Forrest. However, I did not go there. When I arrived in Ubud, I walked past it. I already saw some monkeys and freak out a little.. I just do not like them.
Ik kan geen gids over Ubud maken zonder Monkey Forrest te noemen. Maar ik ben er niet heen geweest. Toen ik aankwam in Ubud liep ik erlangs en zag ik al een paar apen…ik vond het niks en daarom ben ik er ook niet doorheen gelopen.
– Ubud markets
In Ubud there is a food market and a souvenir market. It is quite fun to walk around and look around.
In Ubud vind je een markt waar de locals hun inkopen doen en een souvenir markt. Het is leuk om hierdoorheen te lopen en rond te kijken.
Outside of the city/ buiten de stad:
Outside of Ubud there are plenty of things to do too. I went to the rice terrace and the waterfall with a group of backpackers and a private driver.
Buiten Ubud zijn ook een aantal bezienswaardigheden. Ik ging naar het rijstterras en de waterval met een groep backpackers en een privé chauffeur.
– Tegalalang rice terrace
The Tegalalang rice terrace is one of the most famous sights in Ubud. It is a huge field of rice paddies. Apparently you can walk through it, sadly we did not know that, so we just watched it from a distance. There are shops and cafes around it.
Het Tegalalang rijstterras is een van de bekendste bezienswaardigheden in Ubud. Het is een groot veld met rijst. Blijkbaar mag je er ook doorheen lopen, helaas wisten wij dat niet toen wij er waren, dus hebben wij het alleen van een afstandje bekeken. Er zijn ook winkeltjes en cafés rond het terras.
– Tegenungan waterfall
The Tegenungan waterfall is a famous waterfall on Bali. I went here with some fellowbackpackers and a private taxidriver. When you arrive there, you walk through a market and then you have to walk a lot of stairs down. Then you will see the waterfall. When we were there it was very busy, you can swim there, but I did not do that.
Also, you can walk up on the side to the top. There you will find a small river. It is a pretty impressive waterfall.
De Tegenungan waterval is een bekende waterval op Bali. Ik ging er heen met een groepje backpackers en een prive chauffeur. Eerst moet je over een marktje lopen en dan veel treden naar beneden op een grote trap. Toen wij er waren was het erg druk. Je kunt zwemmen bij de waterval. Ook kun je naar de top van de waterval lopen, daar vind je een klein riviertje. Het is een vrij indrukwekkende waterval.
– Mount Batur
Hiking up Mount Batur to see the sunset is something almost everybody does when tehy are in Ubud. Unfortunately I had hurt my ankle in Legian a few days before, so I could not do the hike. I am still a little sad I was not able to do this, so I want to go back to Bali to do it someday (soon)!
Mount Batur beklimmen om de zonsopkomst te zien is een van de populairste dingen om te doen als je in Ubud verblijft. Helaas was ik een paar dagen eerder in Legian door mijn enkel gegaan, waardoor ik de wandeltocht niet kon doen. Ik vind het nu nog steeds jammer dat ik het niet heb kunnen zien, dus ik wil graag snel terug naar Bali!
FOOD/ ETEN
Since Ubud is pretty touristy, there are plenty of western (and non-western) places to eat. I tried to stay away from the two busy touristy roads that I mentioned before, but I know that there were plenty of nice restaurants (including Starbucks and tons of icecream shops). I usually ate at an Indonesian restaurant, because I liked the food. However, I did find some other places that I have to mention.
Grandpa’s

I went to Grandpa’s when I was craving fresh springrolls (which are yes, Vietnamese..I know) and they were delicious! It is a pretty small cafe, with cool interior and kind staff. When I was there, it was very busy.
Daily Baguette
(Address: JI. Raya Ubud, no 27)
I found Daily Baguette one day while I was walking down the street. It is a French bakery with different types of bread (and toppings), pasty and cakes. I went there are few times and the manager and staff were very friendly. Upstairs they have a little area where you can sit and look at traffic.
Omdat Ubud vrij toeristisch is vind je er veel westerse (en niet-westerse) eetgelegenheden. Ik probeerde niet al te vaak in de twee drukke straten die ik eerder noemde te eten, maar er was zo veel keuze daar (zelfs een Starbucks en veel ijssalons). Vaak at ik bij een Indonesisch restaurant, omdat ik het eten daar lekker vond. Maar ik vond dat ik de volgende plekken wel even moest noemen.
Grandpa’s

Ik vond Grandpa’s toen ik zin had in verse springrolls (en ja, dat is Vietnamees, ik weet het). Het is een vrij smal cafe, met stoer interieur, vriendelijk personeel en heerlijke springrolls. Toen ik er was, zat het helemaal vol.
Daily Baguette

Ik vond Daily Baguette toen ik rond liep door Ubud. Het is een Franse bakkerij waar ze verschillende soorten brood en broodjes (met of zonder beleg), zoete broodjes en taarten verkopen. Ik ben er een paar keer geweest en de manager en het personeel zijn erg vriendelijk. Boven hebben ze een zitgelegenheid.
HOSTEL/ SLAPEN
Happy Mango Tree

When I arrived in Ubud, I booked a room at the Happy Mango Tree Hostel. It sits in a sidestreet in the centre of Ubud. I stayed in a 4-person (pink!) dorm which was basic and only had a small window. It was next to the ‘common area’ so you could hear some noises sometimes at night, but nothing to bad.
The staff was fine, and the bathrooms were outside of the ‘sleeping’ building; they were basic but clean. The commen area is also where you can buy breakfast or lunch and drinks. It is a great area to chill and meet people.
You could also book daytrips through them.
Toen ik aankwam in Ubud, sliep ik de eerste paar nachten in het Happy Mango Tree Hostel. Dit hostel ligt in een zijstraat in het centrum van Ubud. Ik sliep in een simpele (roze) 4-persoonskamer die slechts een klein raam had. Ook zat het naast het ‘gemeenschappelijke gedeelte’, dus je kon soms wel mensen horen praten, maar het was niet al te storend.
Het personeel was oké, en de badkamers waren buiten het ‘slaapgebouw’: dit was ook simpel maar schoon. Het gemeenschappelijke gedeelte was perfect om te chillen, te lezen en mensen te leren kennen. Ook kon je er ontbijten en lunchen, en drinken kopen.
Verder kon je via het hostel ook dagtrips boeken.
In da Lodge Hostel

The other nights I shared a bungalow at In da Lodge with three other girls, that I had met in Legian. Downstairs there was one bunkbed, a very basic bathroom and a small porch. Upstairs was a big bed and a balcony. It was not very cosy, but we only slept there, since most of the time we were chilling at the pool! That was the place to make friends, have a drink and chill.
I am glad that we had a bungalow, because I heard some weird things about the huge dorm (matresses in stead of beds? too many people in the dorm? orgies etc… just check the reviews and decide wether you want to go.)
Funny thing: when we were staying at In da Lodge, there was a lot of noise at the temple next door. It turned out that they had a group cremation-thing for a few days. Apparently they cremate the bodies even few years. We heard noises and speeches all day…it did not stop before 2 at night and started before 7 o’ clock in the morning. So we did not sleep that well.
De andere nachten deelde ik een bungalow bij In da Lodge met drie andere meiden die ik had leren kennen in Legian. Beneden was een stapelbed, een simpele badkamer en een veranda. Op de eerste verdieping was een tweepersoonsbed en een balkon. Het was niet heel gezellig ingericht, maar ach, we sliepen er alleen maar. De meeste tijd brachten we door bij het zwembad! Dat was de plek om vrienden te maken, een drankje te drinken en te relaxen.
Ik ben blij dat wij een bungalow hadden, want ik heb vreemde verhalen over de grote slaapzaal gehoord (matrassen op de grond? veel te veel mensen in de dorm? orgies enz…check eerst de online reviews voordat je besluit er een bed te reserveren.)
Grappig: toen wij hier verbleven kwam er veel lawaai van de naastgelegen tempel. Het bleek dat zij een feest hadden. Elke paar jaar worden de lichamen gecremeerd en dat duurt dan een paar dagen… we hoorden de hele dag door mensen door de luidsprekers spreken…het stopte pas na 2 uur ‘s nachts en begon alweer rond 7 uur ‘s ochtends. Dus we hebben niet heel best geslapen.
